Social migration at work

July 26, 2016

Bureaucracies are social control hierarchies. This is drawn as an organization chart, the iconic network image of many companies and government organizations.  Invented during the industrial economic era, the network divides organizations by rank and specialization. It was designed to augment productivity, but, it does not. In fact, it diminishes productivity because of its negative health effects.

Now we know that the network of social control creates unnecessary stress, increases the likelihood of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and ill-mental health. We can feel this at work as our freedom to contribute to the success of the organization and the organization’s concern for our health wanes.

It is just a matter of time before scientists, millennials and community health professionals leave social control organizations to become part of collaborative social organizations that generate freedom, social support and mutual respect.
